When Julius was about 8 years old he told me he wanted to be a rockstar. Since I was teaching him piano, I made a deal with him that for every classical song he learned I would teach him a rock song. This seemed like pretty good motivation at the time, until I saw how motivated he was about the upcoming piano recital. In a span of a couple weeks, Julius practiced his classical piece with such intensity that I hardly recognized it. He played it astoundingly. Even more astounding was how proud he was to play it. When Julius loved something, he poured his heart and soul into it, giving it his undivided attention and complete focus. He was determined to make his family and himself proud.
